ERAN’s Volunteer Training Program

ERAN, Israel's only emotional first aid service operates a confidential 24-hour hotline seven days a week, 365 days a year, providing unconditional emotional support for all.

Professionally trained volunteers address issues of violence, suicide, loneliness, mental illness, distress, anxiety and more. A patient and compassionate listening ear is offered to any individual regardless of gender, age, nationality, religion, race, or attitude.

There is an urgent need to recruit and train more volunteers to meet the public demand for our services. In the past year, more than 140,000 calls were addressed, and lives were saved by ERAN volunteers “being there” for callers when they needed help most urgently. Although we have almost a thousand volunteers operating hotlines from 10 branches around the country, as well as on the Internet, we need more volunteers in order to be able to address every caller who turns to ERAN for help.

We also experience a dramatic increase in calls during times of war. At these times ERAN provides unique support to the community, as our volunteers are well-trained to aid people suffering from anxiety and symptoms of post traumatic stress. During the 2006 Lebanon War, ERAN responded to 50% more calls than it usually answers in an average month.

ERAN volunteers are carefully selected and trained by professional counselors on ERAN's techniques in addressing these urgent calls for help. After the basic training course volunteers continue to participate in lectures, workshops, professionally led groups addressing specific mental health issues, and peer discussion groups. This continuing education program provides volunteers with on-going support, and a way to continually improve and refine their skills in handling calls.

In addition to the continuous education opportunities for all ERAN volunteers, there is also an advanced course for people who have been volunteering with ERAN for five years or more. This course offers advanced training for serving on ERAN's specialized hotlines, focusing on the special needs of specific groups in the population: Soldiers Hotline, Russian Hotline, Arabic Hotline, Elderly Hotline, and Internet Hotline for Youth.

We are seeking funding in order to respond to the ever growing number of calls seeking emotional support, and need to recruit, train, and maintain more volunteers in all of our branches. ERAN is the only organization in Israel which provides a 24 hour hotline for direct emotional support, and is a vital service for the people of Israel. With your support, together we can help the people who turn to us for emotional first aid.
